What documents do I need for car finance?

Most applications need nothing more than the information on your driving licence. Some need supporting documents, particularly if you are self-employed or recently moved. Having them ready turns a two-day process into a same-day one.

Almost always needed

  • A full UK driving licence, with your current address on it.
  • Three years of address history — lenders ask for this even if you have not moved.
  • Three years of employment history, including employer name and time in role.
  • Your bank account details for the direct debit.

For many applicants, that is the whole list. Lenders verify identity and address electronically, and if everything matches, no paperwork is needed at all.

Sometimes needed

A lender may ask for supporting documents where the electronic check is inconclusive.

  • Proof of address — a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last three months.
  • Proof of income — usually your most recent three payslips.
  • Bank statements — typically three months, to evidence income and outgoings.
  • Proof of deposit, if you are putting down a significant sum.

If you are self-employed

Self-employed applications are routine, but income is evidenced differently. Expect to provide one of the following.

  • Two years of certified accounts.
  • Your SA302 tax calculations and corresponding tax year overviews.
  • Three to six months of business bank statements.

Making it quick

  1. Make sure your driving licence shows your current address.
  2. Register on the electoral roll where you live now.
  3. Have your address and employment history to hand, with dates.
  4. Use the same name format everywhere — mismatches trigger manual checks.
